For the third time in 9 years Atletico Madrid are now champions of the Europa League following their 3-0 defeat of French side Olympique Marseille at the Lyon Stadium in France.
Atletico talisman Antoine Griezmann scored twice in a match that saw suspended manager Diego Simeone not be on the dug out to issue tactical instructions, while Captain Gabi scored late to seal victory for the Spanish giants.
Griezmann who is heavily linked with Barcelona at the end of the season has scored 30 goals this season for Atletico and his two goals paved the way for Atletico’s victory against Marseille.
The victory means Atletico are now joint-most wins of the Europa League title with Sevilla, both sides have won the title three times each.
So far, Atletico have become one of Europe’s most consistent teams in recent seasons, breaking the Barcelona and Real Madrid’s monopoly of the La Liga title in 2013/2014 by winning it.
Presently, they are second in the Spanish top flight with one match remaining, they need a draw to finish second on the table and are on course for a top-three finish for the sixth straight season having appeared in two Champions League finals in that period, losing on both occasions to city rivals Real.
