Barcelona Triumph In Derby, Real Madrid Move Closer To Title Race, Atletico Give Up On Title Race

It was a different ball game for the top three giants in the Spanish La Liga as they played their matches during the weekend in week 37. Barcelona thrashed Espanyol 5-0 in their derby match to maintain top spot position of the table with one more match left for the Catalans to be named champions of Spanish La Liga.

Real Madrid who trailed Atletico from the third position moved on to the second position after having a narrow defeat of Valencia by 3-2, trailing Barcelona with one [point and hoping that an upset could take place on last day of match so that they could finish as champions of the Spanish La Liga side.

Atletico Madrid lost focus on away to Levante, probably being carried away by the adulation of reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League for the second time in four years. They suffered a 2-1 defeat which dashed their dream of winning the title this season, while Villarreal suffered a second defeat after losing to Liverpool in Europe.
