Michael Lang scored a late dramatic goal to give Basel a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, who lost the chance to qualify after their fifth Group match.
The victory means United will have to wait till final day to know their faith after Jose Mourinho’s men lost a vital point in the clash. United will need a point to scale through and finish top of the Group irrespective of who wins below them.
The loss also means Manchester United are the second English team to have lost a match in this season’s Champions League, after Chelsea lost to Roma by 3-0.
Jose Mourinho’s men had all what it takes to score at least three goals in the first half and seal the match, but they failed to utilize their chances and paid dearly for it after Michael Lang’s 89th minutes goal shocked them.
Basel’s hope of qualifying to the knock-out stage has increased as they go second above CSKA Moscow on superior goal difference, but will need an outright win in their last match to secure a place in the last 16.
