The Nigeria female national Basket Ball team D’Tigress have made historical achievement in the just concluded 2017 AFRO Basket championship hosted by Mali, beating 11-time champions Senegal to cling the title for the third time.
D’Tigress who thrashed defending champions Senegal 65-48 to win the title, now complement the effort of the Nigerian men basket team, as this would be the first time Nigeria’s male and female Basketball team will be winning both titles for the first time.
Reaching the final means both teams have qualified for the FIBA World Basketball championship, which takes place in Spain next year, but that also means that the Nigerian female team will have to work hard to give a good account of themselves at the FIBA World Cup.
Though most of the players have returned to their various clubs in Europe and America respectively, but the Sports Minister really need to come up with a plan that will help build on this feat which our Basketball teams have achieved.
Aside the FIBA Basketball World Cup which comes up in September 2018, the Sports Ministry through the office of the Minister of Sports Nigeria, should begin to build a team that would give the Nigeria Basketball teams a good representation at the 2020 Olympics.
This can only be achieved only through quality programming and camping ahead of the championships, where the team should have a team experience against top American and European Basketball teams within the period.
