CAF Champions League Draw: Uncertainty Looms As Defending Champion Gets Tough Group

CAF champions league defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns will face a fierce encounter if they must retain the title following the group stage draw held in Cairo on Wednesday.

The first round of group fixtures is expected to start on the weekend of May 12, 2017.

The Brazilians will rekindle battle with old foe AS Vita in Group C, as well as Saint George S.C. of Ethiopia and Espérance Sportive de Tunis of Tunisia.

The situation was rosy for Sundowns in last year’s edition when their arch-rival AS Vita were disqualified for fielding an an ineligible player in the competition.

In the group A Tunisia powerhouse Etoile du Sahel, Sudanese sides Al Hilal, and Al-Merrikh SC and Mozambique’s Clube Ferroviario de Maputo will log heads together.

Five time Champions League winners and 12 time Egypt Premier League winners Zamalek will lead Group B where they will be facing Zimbabwe Premier League champions CAPS United, USM Alger of Algeria, and Ahli Tripoli of Libyan.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly will play Wydad Athletic Club, Coton Sport and Zanaco in Group D.
