Chile Shock Ambitious Mexico With A 7-0 Defeat To Reach Semifinal of Copa America

It was a celebration of goal-galore for the Copa America champions on Saturday at the Levi’s Stadium in Copa America Centenario quarterfinal, as Chile thrashed Mexico 7-0 to book a place in the last four of the tournament.

Four goals from Eduardo Vargas helped Chile in the 7-0 thrashing, while Edson Puch scored a brace and Alexis Sanchez scored once to make Chile book an appointment with Colombia on Wednesday in the semifinal stage of the tournament at Chicago.

Mexico ended their 22-game undefeated streak in such an infamous manner, conceding seven goals in a match, which was their worst defeat in the past twenty years.

En route the knockout stage, Mexico beat Uruguay 3-1, Jamaica 2-0 and drew Venezuela 1-1 during their group fixtures, scoring a total of six goals but conceding seven goals in a single match. This made the atmosphere very unfavourable for a coach Carlos Osorio’s side that aimed at reaching at least the last four.

Tactically, Chile were ahead of Mexico. As at half-time, Mexico had just two shots and entered the Chilean penalty area just twice, compared to Chile’s nine shots with three on goal.
