The Catholic Youth of Nigeria (CYON) St. Dominic Catholic Church Chapter at Yaba have emerged as champions of the 7th edition of the Windbacher Cup Football competition following a 2-1 defeat of the Block Rosary Crusade in the finals of the tournament which was played yesterday at St. Finbarrs College Akoka.
CYON took the lead in the first half with a 2-0 lead which put them in the drivers seat, mounting pressure on a Block Rosary Crusade side that barely grasped to hit a shot on target during the first half of play, before a second half free-kick gave Block Rosary what appeared to look like a consolation goal in the match.
However, CYON were focused having accepted that a mistake which led to the only goal for their opponent will not repeat itself, and concentrated on an attack that did not yield a third goal but left their opponent grasping for breath before the final whistle was blown.
In the third place match of the competition which was played earlier before the final, the Catholic Couples for Christ (CCC) handed St. Cecilia Choir a slamming 5-2 defeat which made CCC grab the bronze medal of the competition after taking a 4-1 lead in the first half.
A second-half goal from St. Cecilia Choir in the second half which took the scoreline to 4-2 rekindled their hope of having a comeback, but that balloon of hope was burst when CCC registered their fifth goal setting the table for their first ever bronze medal in the competition.
The Windbacher Cup football competition is one of the social activities of the parish, exclusively powered by the Parish Sports Ministry with the theme “Fishing For Christ, Through Sports”
