Golden Generation of 1994 Super Eagles Squad Set To Pay Keshi Last Respect

The golden 1994 Super Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s second Africa cup of nations and qualified to Nigeria’s first ever outing in the Fifa World Cup, are set to honour their late Captain Stephen Okechukwu Keshi whose final burial will take place on Friday.

The novelty match which is expected to hold at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo state, is part of the events lined up for the burial of the late Stephen Keshi. The match would also afford members of the team the opportunity to show their last respect for their captain who passed onafter suffering cardiac arrest.

Keshi captained the Super Eagles to win the Africa cup of nations cup in Tunisia in 1994 and also captained the team to her first ever World Cup in USA 1994, but it would be expected that his deputy Austin Eguavoen will take over as captain in the novelty match.

Until his death, he remains the only coach to qualify two African countries to the world cup, Togo to the 2006 world cup and Nigeria to the 2014. He is the first Nigerian and the second person to win the Afcon title both as a player and as a coach.

He is the fifth person to die among the 22-man team that made up the golden generation of the 1994 squad, others who had passed on before now are Thompson Oliha, Rasheed Yekini, Uche Okafor and Wilfred Agbonivbare.
