Argentina are at the verge of being edged out of the group stage of the World Cup following an impressive pounding of the South American side by Croatia with a 3-0 victory that have left the hope of Argentina qualifying in a dangling manner.
The victory means Argentina are now with one point from two games and have failed to win either of their opening two group stage matches for the first time since 1974.
Croatia who were propelled to victory by teamwork now record their joint second biggest World Cup victory; they beat Cameroon 4-0 in 2014 and Germany 3-0 in 1998.
Croatia’s 2-0 win over Nigeria before humiliating Argentina 3-0 means they have recorded their best consecutive victory in the World Cup for the first time.
Croatia are now through to the round of 16 with six points, courtesy of goals from Rebic (53 minutes), Modric (80′ minutes) and Messi’s teammate in Barcelona Rakitic (91′ minutes).
Argentina’s only hope of qualifying for the round of 16 is hinged on defeating Nigeria in their last group match and will be hoping that Nigeria and Croatia do them a favour by beating Iceland.
