A Japanese surgeon, billionaire Katsuya Takasu gave the Nigeria Olympic football team, Dream Team VI, cash rewards for winning a bronze medal for Nigeria having defeated Honduras 3-2 in the third place match of the Rio 2016 football men event.

The plastic surgeon redeemed a pledge, totaling $390,000 about N135m in cheque to the team.

The philanthropist and golfer made available two cheques to the team in the name of Coach Samson Siasia and Mikel Obi.

According to source, Mr. Takasu said he made the donation to the players after reading about their financial crisis.

The Nigeria U-23 had hit news headlines prior to the begin of the Olympics facing challenges that made them arrive Rio six hours before their first match but they braved all odds to make a podium finish at the Olympics.

The 3-2 win over Honduras on Saturday ensured that Nigeria won its first medal since after the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
