Madrid Humilates Barcelona To Win Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid beat their arch-rivals Barcelona 2-0 at the Santiago Bernebeau to win their 10th Spanish Cup title in a two-legged encounter that gave them victory after 5-1 aggregate.

The absence of Cristiano Ronaldo due to suspension would have been a relief to the Catalans, but Marco Asensio proved that logic wrong, when he looped the ball in from outside the 18-yard-box in a manner that kept Barcelona goalkeeper looking at the ball as it dropped in the net.

While Madrid dominated the game, they also establish a win against Barca for the first time in six years where the Catalans failed to score a single goal in their meeting. The last time Barcelona failed to score a goal against Real Madrid was in the Copa Del Rey final in 2011, when Jose Mourinho was in charge, beating Barca 1-0 to win the cup.

Barcelona manager Valverde who experimented his 3-5-2 formation in the second-leg obviously knows that he has a lot of job to do with his new project (Barcelona), after his side suffered this humiliation. Interestingly, it was Valverde who was in charge of Athletic Bilbao when they humiliated Barcelona with a first-leg 4-0 victory in the 2015 Spanish Super Cup to win the cup.

Zinedine Zidane who has extended his stay at Madrid will now contend to win the Laliga title after winning the Super Cup, as the last manager who completed that feat was Pep Guardiola  in 2009, no other manager or club had since then achieved that, a big job for Zidane.
