Manchester City will be hosting United in today’s derby at the Etihad Stadium, in a match that will seem to determine the fate of both sides as far as the top four battle is concerned. The meeting will also give both managers of the two Manchester clubs an opportunity to rekindle a rivalry which long started when the duo managed two of the biggest clubs in the world.
Winning in today’s derby is key to both teams, while a draw is arguably a result which could give both sides some hopes ahead of the top four race.
Manchester City who are currently fourth on the premier league table with 64 points from 32 matches need a win, to move to the third position on the table ahead of Liverpool who are placed on third position with 66 points from 34 matches.
A draw for City in today’s derby will keep them trailing Liverpool with one point, but that will be very dangerous for Liverpool as both City and United will have an advantage over them since both sides will still have one match left of which winning will take both sides to the third and fourth position respectively.
City need today’s derby more than United, Guardiola’s men have lost all chances of winning a silverware this season, the only dream left for them is to ensure that they finish top four to enable them be in the champions league next season otherwise Pep will find himself in a very tough situation.
United on the other hand still have a hope of qualifying for the champions league next season even if they fail to finish top four on the premier league, but that will largely depend on their success at the Europa Cup, where they have already gotten to the semifinal stage and have a date with Celta Vigo.
In all of these, tonight match is key, it is in fact the match of the season and a must win for any team who wants to soar to the top four with ease and comfort.
