The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has declared that Argentine and Barcelona super star Lionel Messi is the finest footballer in the history of football.
Pope Francis, a supporter of San Lorenzo football club made the statement, while speaking with young men and women in the World Youth Day. He stated “For me Messi Is Better than Pele and Maradona”.
The Barcelona superstar who is also the all-time leading goalscorer for Argentina, Messi, has often been compared to past greats such as Pele and Diego Maradona, as well as the Portuguese and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo who goes head-to-head with the Argentine.
The Pontiff happens to be one of the few persons that was privileged to watch all the players (Messi, Pele and Maradona) while they played, and probably reached his conclusion based on what he saw about the trio.
It will be recalled that Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football after experiencing a frustrating outing in the Copa America Centenario, where Argentina lost in the final to Chile for a second time in a row.
