Argentina are now in a “do-or-die” situation as they play their final Russia 2018 World Cup Group match today against Ecuador in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier.
Argentina who are tw0-time world champions are currently in the sixth position on the South America world cup qualifier table and they necessarily need to win to secure a spot in the automatic four spots allocated to CONMEBOL.
Their host Ecuador have lost their past five qualifiers and do not have any hope of being to the World Cup, but Argentina have not beaten them in Quito since 2001.
Argentine coach who commented ahead of the match is confident that his side would qualify and their future is in their hands.
The former Chile manager was quoted by BBC Sport to say “It depends on us,” said Sampaoli.
“I’m very confident that if we play with the conviction that we did against Peru, then we are going to be in the World Cup.”
A draw might be enough for Sampaoli’s side to finish fifth and enter a play-off against New Zealand, but that will also be subject to Peru losing at home to fourth-placed Colombia.
