Mexico beat a star-studded defending champions Germany 1-0 to record their first ever victory against the German side in any competitive tournament, the only time they have defeated Germany before now was in a friendly match in June 1985.
Hirving Lozano who was Mexico top scorer in the World Cup qualifier scored a 35th minutes goal that eventually became the only goal of the match, heaping pressure on the German side that had a 26 shots on goal but failed to see the back of the net.
The defeat on Germany means that this is the third consecutive World Cup in which the reigning champions have failed to win their opening match – Italy drew 1-1 with Paraguay in 2010, and Spain lost 5-1 against the Netherlands in 2014.
The defeat was also the first time in history a German side lost their opening game of the World Cup since 1982, when West Germany were upset by Algeria.
It could also cause more problems for the German side who may end up meeting Brazil in the round of 16, should they win their next two matches and finish second and if Brazil eventually finish top of Group E.
