The Nigeria U23 team defeated Honduras 3-2 to win the bronze medal for the men football event of Rio Olympics 2016 on Saturday.
The win makes Nigeria the first nation to have won the three medals available for football in the Olympics. Nigeria won gold in Atlanta 1996, Silver in Beijing 2008 and bronze in Rio 2016. A feat yet to be achieved by most football nations at the Olympics.
Interestingly, the bronze medal in football is the only medal Nigeria won at the Rio Olympics, a consolation medal for the nation and the boys really did the nation proud by ensuring that Nigeria did not come to the Olympics without a medal.
Nigeria’s hope of winning gold at the Rio Olympics was impeded by Germany, who defeated them 2-0 in the semifinal of the Rio Olympics.
