Olympic silver medalist at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Omotayo Olajide, has stated that he is not participating at the Seamaster ITTF Challenge 2018 tagged Nigeria Open 2018 with the intention to cause any upset.
The 23-year-old who is ranked 199 in the world latest ITTF ranking told Sport Intelligence (www.sportintelligencemag.com) at the Teslim Balogun stadium today that he is taking part to give his best and not aiming at causing an upset.
Omotayo said: “I am not here to cause an upset I am here to win matches, I am among the top players here in this tournament hence causing an upset is not part of my thought, but I just want to be myself and put in my best in the tournament”.
Omotayo also stated that his expectations from the tournament is high as he has undergone several training to prepare for the tournament. “My expectations are really high because I have had series of training sessions and have also taken part in several other tournaments outside Nigeria just to prepare for this tournament and I hope to put in a good performance this year”.
“Last year I lost at the round of 64 and this year I am already in the main draw, which means I am not going to play in the group stages tomorrow so for me it is an improvement and I hope to do better this year”.
When asked if he was aiming to finish among the top three in the tournament, the 23-year-old said: “I see myself putting in a good performance, and I cannot really say if I am going to finish first, second or third, we have so many highly ranked players ahead of me who are also taking part in the tournament”. “However, in sport nothing is impossible, but I believe this year will be different” he concluded.
