The President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has called on government at the national level to put Table Tennis into consideration following the outstanding track record which the sport has given to the nation in international competitions.
Ishaku Tikol who had a brief chat with this writer recently in Lagos, noted that no national recognition has been given to Table Tennis Athletes in the past five years despite their making waves in International Championships and hitting top global rankings in the game.
Tikol said without mincing words that “Athletes from other sport who have made positive impacts on the image of the country has been celebrated in the past five years, but no one is recognizing those who have made positive impact from Table-Tennis in the country.
He also stated categorically that the Federation has put forward a proposal to the Minister of Sport Solomon Dalung, seeking autonomy that would allow the federation experience total transformation and also providing unlimited opportunities to both the NTTF as a body and Nigeria as a whole.
He lamented the ordeals which their athletes encounter with finance in trying to participate in intercontinental events, but also commended the federation who have always stood by them during these period, rendering financial assistance where necessary.
Tikol did not fail to mention that one of Nigeria’s Para-Athletes Faith Obajuale, recently got international recognition as a result of the huge points which she gathered in several competitions, and this has has also given her a free ticket to participate in the forthcoming Goldcoast Commonwealth Games which comes up in two months time.
He proudly noted that the federation can now boast of more than twelve young athletes who are now playing at the professional level, and further added that adequate measures has now been put in place to enable female athletes improve.
