Manchester United manager has come out to state that his side’s 3-2 win over league leaders Manchester City was basically to ensure they secure the maximum three points and maintain their second position and not to spoil City’s celebration.
The former Chelsea boss whose side put up an impressive second half performance to come back told BBC Sport that:”Our challenge is to finish second but I want to congratulate City for the title – because they are going to win and deservedly. They gave no chance to the others because they had this season of not stopping winning.
Mourinho was quoted by the source to say: “My objective here was to get points and not spoil any celebrations. The point is can we improve enough to catch them next season?”
“I think mathematically we need six points to stay in the top four and this win is part of that, he told BBC Sport.
Aside reducing the gap between United and City, the win also ensures that Mourinho’s side increases the gap between them and Liverpool as they are now four points clear off and with one more match outstanding ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham.
