Odion Ighalo Scores Hat-Trick As Eagles Thrash Ambitious Libya

Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo scored his first ever hat-trick for the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the Eagles trashed a determined Libya 4-0 to move to the second position of the table in the Cameroon 2019 AFCON qualifier.

The 29-year-old opened scoring for Nigeria in the fourth minutes through a penalty, but had to wait till the 58th and 70th minutes before rounding off with his historical hat-trick.

Nigeria’s fourth goal came through Simon Kalu in the 90th minutes to seal the victory as Eagles recorded their highest victory in the qualifier so far.

The victory also means Nigeria are now one point adrift South Africa who are on top with 7 points and also got a victory against Seychelles following a 6-0 victory earlier today.

Libya came out more determined than the Eagles at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, gaining more possession but lacked the confidence needed to score a goal.

Nigeria’s victory in the encounter also boost their hopes of qualifying for the AFCON tournament, after missing out of the continental event in 2015 and 2017 respectively.

The second-leg of the encounter will be played in Tunisia on Tuesday, and the Eagles will be hoping to sustain their victory so as to keep their hopes alive before their last two group matches against Seychelles and Bafana-Bafana of South Africa.
