The duo of Nigeria’s Omotayo Olajide and Aruna Quadri are set to meet in the semifinal of the ongoing 2018 Africa-ITTF Championship in Mauritius.
Omotayo Olajide who made his debut at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April this year and won silver caused a major upset at the ongoing event to reach the semifinal, beating Egyptian Mohammed El Beiali 4-2 who was seeded number 3 in the round of 16 stage of the tournament to reach the quarterfinal.
In another dramatic show that shocked fans, Omotayo defeated another Egyptian Shady Magdy in a thriller 4-3 encounter in the quarterfinal to set up a semifinal meeting with his fellow compatriot Aruna Quadri.
At the Seamaster 2018 Nigeria Open which took place in Lagos in August this year, Omotayo who was sent packing from the tournament in the round of 32 had earlier said he was not interested in causing an upset in that event, but he probably had kept his desire for Mauritius.
With the general outcome of the result so far, three Nigerians and three Egyptians will be playing in the semifinal of men and women singles events on the final day of the tournament.*
Omotayo will face Aruna Quadri while Egypt’s Ahmed Saleh will slug it out with Segun Toriola in the men’s singles semfinal. Egypt’s Dina Meshref will square up against Nigeria’s Edem Offiong while Amira Yousry will face the winner between Egypt’s duo of Yousra Helmy and Reem El-Eraky in the women’s singles semifinal.*
