Euro 2016:Payet’s Late Goal Gives France A Win Over Stubborn Romania

France beat Romania 2-1 in the opening match of the Euro 2016 tournament which took place at Stade de France stadium, with all three goals coming in the second half of the match.

Giroud opened scoring for France in the 58th minutes through a header in which he contested with the goal keeper, before Romania leveled up through a penalty in the 65th minutes, after Evra brought down Stanciu in the 18-yard-box and a penalty was awarded to Romania. Stanciu converted it to a goal from the spot kick, putting the scores at 1-1.

The scoreline remained 1-1 until the 85th minutes, when Dimitri Payet fired a shot that went through the Romania defence, giving the French a lead and keeping their hope of winning alive until the final whistle was blown.

The win makes France to maintain their lead in head-to-head record against Romania in their last eight meetings, being the fourth victory while the remaining four ended in a draw.
