The 2016 Olympic Games officially start today Friday August 5, in Rio City with an opening ceremony which is expected to take place at the 78,838 seat capacity Maracana stadium.
Athletes from 206 nations will converge at the venue, and also a refugee team which are all present in Brazil to compete in 28 sports and be watched globally by an expected audience of about 3 billion to watch the opening ceremony.
Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Briton Dame Judi Dench have been confirmed to have key roles to perform in the ceremony before the 207 competing teams take part in the Parade of Nations.
This is the first time the Olympic game will be hosted in South America, though its build-up was faced with several issues such as the move to impeach the President of Brazil, Zika virus and the Russian doping scandal.
However, the game is expected to officially start today August 5, and end on August 21 after an opening ceremony, but the actions have already started with team sports event such as football.
