Rivers United, Warri Wolves and Ifeanyi Ubah FC are through to the quarterfinals stage of this year’s Federation Cup, following their defeat of Shooting Stars FC, Prime FC and Katsina United respectively.
The match was unable to be settled within the normal regulation time, as both teams played a barren draw, leading into extra time. However, the extra time eventually led to penalties, before Rivers United beat Shooting Stars to grab one of the quarter-final tickets up for grabs in at the Ahmadu Bello stadium in Kaduna.
Special thanks to veteran goalkeeper Sunday Rotimi, who was the hero of the Garden City team as the two penalties which he saved, put an end to the quarterfinal dream of Coach Gbenga Ogunbote of Shooting Stars, whose side have come this far in the Federation Cup for the first time in five years.
It was a joyful moment for Warri Wolves, who scaled through also to the quarterfinal stage after playing a 1-1 draw with Prime FC at full-time, but eventually winning on penalties at 6-5. The victory also afforded them an opportunity to get their pound of flesh from Prime FC who edged them out of the same tournament in 2014.
Ifeanyi Ubah’s men also scaled through to the quarter-final stage, after Maduabuchi Okereke and Suleiman Mohammed goals guaranteed victory for the heavy spenders, moving them at a pace that is commensurate with their spending.
