Cristiano Ronaldo maintained his status as a hero in Real Madrid, as his hat-trick put Madrid through to the last four in their second-leg encounter against Wolfsburg at Santiago Bernebeau. The visitors had their day in the first-leg, after they defeated Real Madrid 2-0.
Ronaldo’s goals came in the 16′, 17′ and 77′ minutes, igniting light of hope at Santiago Bernebeau stadium and forcing Zidane’s men into the semifinal of the tournament. Madrid fans were up to the task, as they cheered Ronaldo, who put smiles on their faces.
The hat-trick, also extends Ronaldo’s all-time highest goal scorer lead in the champions league from 90 to 93 goals, which makes him 10 goals away from Lionel Messi who is at 83 goals.
Madrid also became the third team in the history of the champions league, to overturn a 2-0 deficit lead after Barcelona and Manchester United respectively.
The hat-trick did not just see Madrid through to the semifinal stage, but it also saved Zidane’s job as manager of the club, as club officials went into the dressing room after the match to congratulate Zidane and the boys for a job well done.
The draws for the semifinal stage will be drawn on Friday at 11:30 am.
