The Eagles of Carthage of Tunisia will be hoping to redeem Africa’s image today when they meet the Three Lions of England in their World Cup opener after being away from the tournament in the last 12 years.
Though they will be coming as underdogs in the encounter, they will be looking up to at least score and maybe get a win for Africa in the tournament.
So far, three African teams have had their own encounters and all three teams lost without scoring a single goal, with both Egypt and Morocco losing by 1-0 to Uruguay and Iran respectively, while Nigeria lost by 2-0 to Croatia.
Tunisia who made their debut in the 1978 edition of the World Cup were also the first African and Arab team ever to win a match at a World Cup finals after beating Mexico 3-1.
Today’s match mark their return after missing three consecutive world cup editions.
They will not be under pressure when they lie out against the Three Lions of England since they will be coming as underdogs, but they will be looking forward to causing a major upset.
