The CAF Russia 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier match which took place at the Mandela National Stadium Kampala came out with a surprise result, as underdogs Uganda beat group favourites the Pharaohs of Egypt, to move top of Group E with 7 points.
Emmanuel Okwi’s 51st minutes goal in the second half made the difference as the Uganda Cranes which seemed to be jinxed against the North Africans finally secured their first ever win against Egypt in any competitive game.
Both teams have 18 times before the World Cup qualifier with Egypt winning 14 times, 3 draws came up and Uganda only won on one occasion in April 1965 during an international friendly which ended 5-1.
Uganda were determined, and the team’s goalkeeper and captain Denis Onyango who had boasted before the clash was good to his words, keeping a clean sheet against the Pharaohs which led to the Egyptians been frustrated during the encounter.
Though no team have secured a ticket to the Fifa World Cup after the match, Egypt who trail Uganda with one point will have to do something extra-ordinary in their second-leg to go back to the top.
But it seems this Uganda squad is determined and wants to book a place in Russia.
