World Cup host Russia suffered their first defeat in the World Cup today after a 3-0 defeat saw Uruguay finish top of Group A with maximum nine points from three matches.
Luis Suarez opened scoring for the South Americans in the 10 minutes of play before an own goal from Denis Cheryshev in the 23rd minutes increased the lead to two, putting the host in more pressure.
The pressure heaped on the host led to frustration before Igor Smolnikov got a red card in the 36th minutes, leading to Russia resolving to thinking more of how to defend rather than seeking to equalize.
The tempo changed and it even became more difficult for the South American side to get another goal, as they had to wait till the 90th minute before Cavani got Uruguay’s third goal leading to a 3-0 victory.
Both teams qualify to the round of 16, but Uruguay finish top of Group A with nine points while Russia are second from six points.
