Uruguay take on France today in the first match of the quarterfinal stage of the World Cup, in a clash that obviously is the only meeting at this stage of this tournament that would have two former champions.
France who eliminated Argentina in the round of 16 would want to extend their dominance over another South American side, while Uruguay who frustrated European Champions out at the round of 16 will also be glad to continue with such feat with France, it is going to be a heated battle.
Uruguay and France are meeting each other for the fourth time at the World Cup, but this is the first time they will be meeting each other at the knockout stage.
In 2002 and 2010 respectively, the two teams met in the group stages and the scoreline ended 0-0 but Uruguay had beaten France before then in 1966 with a scoreline of 2-1.
The only time France has ever beaten Uruguay in eight previous meetings was a 2-0 win in a friendly at Paris in August 1985, and they will be looking up to set the records straight when they meet today by reaching the semifinal for the first time since 2006.
Interestingly, France have not lost to any South American side in their last nine World Cup matches against them, they have won five times and drew four times, keeping a clean sheet in seven of those games.
